Colts History

When Alan Badcock took over the Chairmanship for 10 years in 1980 and he immediately identified the need for a structured Colts Section and to his joy the Colts Section took many big strides towards establishing itself as one of the best, if not the most active and successful of the Junior Hockey Clubs in England.

Maidenhead Colts first came to national attention when a 14-year-old Jon Potter captained the U16 side to the National Title in 1978. Near the forefront of south competitions since that date, a young squad including Phillip & Owen McGuire, Gavin Bambury, Simon Nicklin, Paul Way and goalkeeper David Murphy won the U16 Indoor Title at Crystal Palace in 1986 and were unlucky to lose out on the U18 title a year later.

In the exciting period from the 80’s to 90’s, the likes of Ian Ashby, Kevin Murphy, Peter and Trevor Jackson, Simon Tapsall, Phillip and Owen McGuire, Gavin Bambury, Simon Nicklin, Paul Way, Karen Treloar, Nicole Romilly, David Murphy, Martin Tucker, Donald Henley King and several others all gained International and UAU honours at various levels from U16 to full senior representation.

More recently, further International and Oxbridge recognition has come through David and James Tyler, Matthew Daly, Nick Duncombe, Chris Pearce, Jo Cox, Jacqueline Broers, Victoria Goodacre, Fiona Hinds, Hannah Smith, Niamh Staunton and Chantal Frost.

Well though the Boys have done in recent years by getting through to the Mercian and south finals on several occasions, the Girls went one better by becoming Runner-up in the national U18 title in 2000/01 season. In addition, the girls have won the U18 Home Counties League on three occasions and are the reigning U19 Berkshire Champions after retaining the title for the fourth year in a row.

The Colts Section has enjoyed continued development at all age groups over the years and has taken full advantage of The Active Sports Initiative to both train more coaches and to actively take the sport into more schools within the Borough.
