Return of a Legend

11 months ago By Jonathan Crowther

The first clean sheet for the team this season

For the first time in nearly twenty years the dust was wiped off pads, kickers and body protection, all to be put on by the new Magicians goalkeeper. Chad the captain was desperate as all other choices were unavailable and so the "legend" that is Oz stepped out of the shadows and donned the kit. There are very few members of the club who can remember back so far when youthful goalkeeper kept goal for the Maidenhead Hockey Clubs top teams. With a makeshift back four who had a combined total of nearly 200 years experience between them OMTs found their way to goal comprehensively blocked and on the odd occasion they got through the "Legend" kept them out.
Stating the game unsure whether the team were on a 3/4s or 1/2 court press the captain lasted all of ten seconds before withdrawing from the pitch with a hamstring tear and could only watch as a rejigged team without his goal scoring aptitude dominate from the beginning.
Your narrator cannot remember in which order the goals were scored as he was working very hard to break down the OMT attacks suffice to say that the final score was Magicians 4 to OMTs 0
Apologies to Ashley Clark for last week's report as he reminded us that he had scored the last goal and wasn't mentioned.
This week he doubled his tally, with two goals, the first a tap in at the far post and the second another exocet (The dictionary doesn't recognise this word but that's Americans for you) past a startled keeper.
Callum Wellman got onto the score sheet rather fortuitously with a bobbly scrambled goal that he assures us it was his stick that got the last touch, he did jump around in amazement and joy when it went in.
Finally a sober "Smudge" snaffled a single goal but in his own words apologised to the team for missed quite a few others. He assured the team that he was getting back to full fitness and abstaining from a Friday ale or two.
Unusually I must give credit to the skills of the young opposition OMT player "Joseph" who showed off some really great skills culminating in one fabulous scoop shot at goal which missed the far top corner by a few inches although the "Legend" said that he had had it covered. (The team defence did mob him to stop him passing which nullified his efforts.)
The author has used some poetic licence in this weeks report but no offense was meant to anyone mentioned or to those unnamed team stalwarts.
