MAIDENHEAD HOCKEY CLUB – VETERANS TOURNAMENT 2019
Perfect weather and two good grass pitches at Bray, provided ideal conditions for the 41st annual veteran’s tournament organised by Lionel Connor, on Sunday 14th April. The 7 participating teams included the Abrahams from Holland and STK Berlin from Germany, together with the two Maidenhead teams, i.e. Old Goats and Merlins, plus Exiles, Rusty Nuts and Handbags.

The Dutch and German sides and the Handbags, filled the top 3 places, with the Handbags bagging the trophy for the first time. The wooden spoon was presented to the Exiles, from Windsor.

By winning their last game the Old Goats narrowly avoided the wooden spoon. In contrast the Merlins had one of their better tournament results even though they didn’t score a goal until their last match, then two goals down they rattled in four goals in ten minutes thanks to Tim Brennan (1st), Marc Jones, Chad Fitzgibbon and Wayne Sims.

The tournament was preceded by a formal dinner the evening before catered by expertly by Brian and organised by Sue Cheale, when goal keeper Ronnie Fuller, was presented with a Lifetime Achievement Award for his long and dedicated service to the club.
