Ladies 1st XI beat Southampton 1st XI 5 - 0
Scorers; Jane Smith & Jo Cox
Southampton started well and for the first few minutes Maidenhead seemed to be on the back foot. However some solid defending from the back line ensured that Southampton were not able to capitalise on their early opportunities.
Regaining their composure, a quick exchange of passes between Goodacre and Scarborough allowed Maidenhead to counter. With the defence parting, Scarborough was able to drill the ball powerfully into the circle for Smith to deflect into the top corner. This was to be the first of a four goal spectacular for Smith.
Southampton continued to pass the ball well but offered little threat to the Maidenhead goal. Man of the match Miall worked well with midfield, combining excellent passing and a pinpoint delivery from Hankin allowed Smith to hammer home a crisp reverse stick strike, 2-0 Maidenhead.
A succession of short corners for Maidenhead ensued, from which came goals 3 and 4. First a well rehearsed Smith straight strike, and then a fantastic Cox mid-air deflection.
Disappointingly, the Maidenhead girls were not able to maintain this powerful display of pressure into the second half and whilst opportunities arose they were not put away. The sole goal of the second half came from determined running and tenacity from the forwards and midfielders. Giving the Southampton players very few options on their free hits, Maidenhead forced Southampton to try to play the ball short. Smith once again dispossessed the Southampton defender and drove hard into the circle to finish with a strong strike.
