Mens 1s teach Oxford a lesson
Maidenhead HC men’s 1sts hit the ground running with what captain Chris Brown called a ‘pleasing’ 4-2 victory over Oxford OBU in the South Hockey League MBBO opener at Altwood on Saturday.
Maids, who missed out on promotion at the end of last season when they lost the play-off semi-final, scored three first-half goals against an Oxford side which now has formal links with Oxford Brookes University.
Maids were soon 4-0 to the good early in the second period as Matthew Heller, Richard Mulvany, Daniel Reid and Stephen Roe all got their names on the scoresheet.
But the hosts did not run away with the victory, as Brown explains.
“We are pleased to start with a win as Oxford are not an easy team to play,” he said.
“This link up Oxford have with the university has meant they have a greater depth of players and that showed on Saturday.
“They have some talented individuals, but we pressed them well and led 3-0 at half-time and it could have been more.
“We went 4-0 up early in the second period then took our foot off the pedal.”
He added; “They hit back to two goals in quick succession which changed the momentum of the match."
