Another trip round the M25 for the Merlins

The Merlins were missing their normal midfield line up but received welcome support from Tunbridge Wells Grasshoppers. At the start Russell Higginbotham, not having played for three years looked the best man on the Merlins side in the first half but injury took its toll in the second and he was forced to return to retirement.
Nevertheless, in an exciting end to end encounter with lots of enthusiasm, cold and horizontal rain and a great many chances, we somehow managed to lose by the odd six goals!
At least the M25 behaved on both legs of the journey to Sevenoaks, to everyone’s relief on our third trip to Kent.
The Black Knights fielded an experienced and seemingly well geared side, and somehow managed to go two up after Maidenhead twice lost the ball in their opponents 25. Ronnie “the Cat” Fuller threw himself around in goal, making several great saves. Their ‘keeper did likewise. The ball moved around like a pin ball. It was exciting and yet despite equal attempts the Black Knights added to their tally much to the Merlins frustration. Balls just kept going wide with everyone, not just Rhys Edwards, hitting the post.
The match ended with a thumping loss on paper but not in effort. The showers were a terrible trickle, although the tea, in what could be the next pub to close in Sevenoaks, made up for it – Sausage, chips and beans. Thank you.
Man of the match – Ronnie Fuller.
