Winning streak

The Ladies 1st XI maintained their winning ways in the first home game of the season with a valiant victory over Sonning 1sts this Saturday (30th September). Having made a slow start to the game, Maids were under pressure and conceded within the first 15 minutes. Not letting this setback get their heads down, the team rallied together and began to pass the ball around the opposition more effectively, culminating in a short corner won by Katie Parry. An expertly executed drag flick by Liza got the team back in the game and Maids dominated possession for the remainder of the half.

This momentum continued into the second half. With Maids on top, it was imperative we capitalised on our dominance. Liza won a vital short corner which she then converted into a goal which was disallowed by the umpires. This decision was to prove inconsequential as Liza’s second drag flick on target was heroically deflected in by Amy Martin, making it 2-1 to Maidenhead.

An unfortunate green card for Jen Martin did not stop the team from persisting up front, narrowly missing multiple chances. Our lead was then extended by a tremendous lifted shot by Sarah Fuller into the top corner, making the scoreline 3-1 and seemingly our game to win. With 9 minutes to go Maids were subject to a counter attack that was dealt with confidently by goalkeeper Katie Hudson.

The win was then secured when Amy Martin scored her second goal of the day, taking the ball along the touchline and slotting it past the Sonning goalkeeper. A game that initially seemed like an uphill battle was transformed by Maidenhead’s determined mindset. It was a quintessential team performance that was rewarded with 3 points - the perfect 18th birthday treat for Yana Todorova! The fantastic support from the sideline helped the team through the toughest parts of the match and was gratefully received.

Sarah Fuller was voted as Man of the Match for her goal-of-the-season contender strike and for the many other near misses, with Becks Fuller, Chantal Hankin and Amy Martin also receiving nominations.

The 1st XI hope to continue their winning streak when they face Salisbury away next week.
