In an electrifying clash at Altwood, Maidenhead Ladies 1s faced off against the formidable Oxford Hawks 2s this weekend.
From the onset, Maidenhead displayed a fiery determination, but it was Hawks who started stronger scoring two early goals. An unfortunate injury to captain Chantal Hankin, left maids with a tough mountain to climb.
Undeterred, the ladies responded well, with Eddie Westacott's superb assist and Sarah Downes' sensational shot narrowing the gap to 2-1. Another goal from Hawks meant the halftime score stood at 3-1.
Fuelled by unwavering support from the Altwood sideline and a motivational halftime talk, the second half witnessed a remarkable transformation. Although unable to convert an early corner won by Jacqui Bird, the ladies continued to command possession, creating numerous opportunities, certainly ruffling the feathers of Oxford Hawks.
An unfortunate tackle from Amy Martin resulted in a green card and temporary sideline stint for her. This did not dampen the Maids confidence, who battled on and it was not long before the playing field was levelled and it was Hawk’s turn for two minutes on the side.
Despite a masterful display from maids and an incredibly exciting game for both sides, the ladies were not able to convert their efforts and the final score remained 3-1. It was Sarah Downes for her expert goal and continuous efforts who was voted player of the match.
Even though the scoreboard did not favour them this Saturday, Maidenhead Ladies left the field with heads held high, immensely proud of their performance. They hope to take their positive performance into their upcoming battle against Oxford Ladies 1s next weekend.
