Ladies 1's vs Henley

Ladies 1’s:
Maidenhead’s first XI faced local rivals Henley away this weekend (27th January). Despite icy conditions, the match went ahead.

After an early save from Katie Hudson, Maidenhead then applied pressure on Henley, with an early line ball from Issy Harris-Evans to Sarah Fuller who then found Liza Semenenko, who did a fantastic job of keeping the ball in play. Liza then went on to win a short corner which was excellently saved by the Henley goalkeeper.

Unfortunately, Maidenhead conceded a short corner which Henley converted to make it 1-0. Yet this did not deter the side, who then proceeded to improve their game in response. The goal of the season was nearly scored when Liza skilfully dropped an aerial into the path of Chantal Hankin, who narrowly missed the target after having expertly brought the ball down under pressure.

Sarah then exhibited her 3D skills by dinking the ball over two Henley player’s sticks and making a fantastic run into the D. The closest chance of the half came from a lifted push at goal from Liza, yet Henley’s goalkeeper dealt with everything we threw at her. The half ended as Liza’s shot on goal narrowly missed the target.

Going into the second half 1-0 down, we continued the momentum we had garnered, with Yana Todorova winning a short corner which Henley defended well.

Despite numerous more attempts at goal, Maidenhead were unable to move the ball around a very strong Henley goalkeeper, the result being a 1-0 loss. There are positives to take from the way we played but lessons still to be learnt.

We look forward to implementing these this weekend coming, when we will face Southampton at home.
