Off the back of a 0-2 win away at Horsham last week, Maidenhead faced Wimbledon 1as for the first home league game.
Despite a good squad performance, Maidenhead couldn’t find the back of the net and came away with a frustrating draw despite having a vast majority of possession.
Maidenhead started well and they began to dominate as the game progressed. Wimbledon had trouble breaking down the back line of Jo, Cox, Bex Miall, Katy White, Lucy Rowe and Nic Perkins. Maidenhead had several chances up front but some strong defensive play from the away team meant the forward line couldn’t convert.
The midfield worked tirelessly and both Emer Harte and Shona Young created some great chances for the forwards in the final quarter. Quite a few resulted in upgrades to short corners but the Wimbledon defence held strong.
The second half saw Maidenhead once again have the majority of the play but some timely tackles from the opposition meant that the deadlock could not be broken despite the constant pressure.
Jane Smith, coach at Maidenhead 1s, said: “It’s a great to start the new season with a positive performance. Our squad from last year has been strengthened by some new and returning players, this will allow us to have good depth within the training squad and keep competition for places at its maximum. If we continue to work hard and improve, we can all look forward to a promising and enjoyable season ahead!”
Maidenhead sit in fifth position with a clean sheet and a game in hand on all of those above with Reading 1as sitting at the top with full points. This week Maidenhead face a tough test against Surbiton 2s who are second.
