Maidenhead’s performance in their second home league fixture on the season versus newly promoted Witney, was equal only to the abysmal weather.

Despite the driving rain and wind, the game got underway and at the start looked quite promising for Maidenhead. However within the first two minutes of the ball being constantly in Witney’s defensive end, Witney broke away down their right hand side with the forward driving from practically the half way line to the back line before passing it to an incoming team mate who easily slotted it away under the stranded Maidenhead keeper, Emma Cross.

Maidenhead managed to get over this initial shock and continued to pile on the pressure at the other end with some good passing between the lines. A few attacking chances were denied and then another Witney attack resulted in them doubling the lead. Maidenhead started to become a bit nervous and basic mistakes started to creep in across the pitch. With about ten minutes to go before half time Witney then scored another goal to make it 0-3 at half time.

The second half started optimistically for Maidenhead before the forth goal went in and heads went down. The substituted keeper, Becky Adlard not managing to reduce the angle for the Witney forward to score on her reverse at a tight angle. It didn’t get much better for the home side as three further goals were added to Witney’s tally and Maidenhead were left with nothing to write home about.

Coach Mark Stuart-Thompson commented: “Today was not our day. We just didn’t gel as a team and they punished us. We are regrouping as a team and the only thing we can do is put this behind us and concentrate on next week.”
