First game of the season - so glad to be back

Our game started on a windy Saturday at Wycombe High where after a warm up and team talk (socially distanced!) we were all switched on a raring to go. We won first pushback and used this, starting strong and working hard to get the ball up the pitch. Our mids and forwards worked well together, working in pairs as we had practised on Thursday. Amelia and Eloise working up the left hand side and then switching to Taylor and Ruth on the right with Anji supporting from the middle heading for the D. For the first 10 minutes of the game the we kept the ball in Wycombe's half making their defenders work extra hard to keep us out of the D. Then as our energy levels dropped slightly Wycombe took advantage and pushed us back into our half. They won two short corners, the first our defenders Helen, Tegan, Jess and Georgina clear away from Kiera and the goal. Unfortunately, on their second attempt the ball found the back of the net, one nil to Wycombe. We reenergised our team with some subbing as we had plenty of them! and worked our way up the pitch again. We won a short corner and after a little slip up Devin pushed it back into the D where Amelia aimed it towards the goal and Ava touched it in, one all! We were thankful for the half time whistle as everyone had been working very hard and needed a breather and drink. There wasn't too much to talk about at half time as everyone had applied everything that was talked about before the game, working hard (intensity!), tracking back and helping to defend, and using the spaces by making lead runs. We decided that we needed to tighten up our man marking as we were able to pressure them into making mistakes this way and win the ball for ourselves.

Whistle for the second half to start and we were ready after a socially distances '1,2,3, go maids go'!

Wycombe had pushback and came out strong. We struggled to get the ball out of our half and Wycombe overloaded the D several times. They won several short corner and kept on pressuring us but then we found our energy and rhythm again and managed to push back over the halfway line with Devin and Eleanor clearing the ball out of our defence and up to our waiting defenders. After some more subbing Ava worked hard to get the ball up from Mid to the D and Deb positioned herself well but we were unable to convert any more goals. Wycombe pressured us again and everyone worked hard to try and keep the ball out of our D, Molly made the Diamond position her own and really helped to move the ball out of defence and up to the mids and forwards. Despite all our efforts Wycombe scored twice more and we finished on 3-1 to Wycombe. However, we all came off the pitch please with how we had played. You would never have known that we had 5 players who had never played with us before, as we all played as a team and should be proud of our performance.

Well done everyone, I am looking forward to our next game - Man of the Match Taylor Harnett
