Shock defeat for the 5s!

What went wrong?

The start was a repeat of our usual play we had some great play up the right side with Catrin and Emily linking up nicely which lead to an attempt on goal. Newbury then replied with a drive in to our defensive half and we were caught by surprise and they slipped through to find the net. So as usual 15 minutes in we were 1 goal down. But this week we did not loose heart instead it seemed to drive us to play better. We had another push up the right but Newbury replied and a long but we managed to clear it nicely. Emily picked it up and drove it all the way to the D but couldn't find a way to goal but got us a long corner, this was followed by 2 short corners but didn't get the outcome we wanted. Then we had a drive up the pitch by Immy who made a lovely pass to Jess W who got low and smacked it to goal, only for it to rebound on the post, she hit the rebound and it looked like it was going wide but Sam stepped in from her post position and tapped it past keeper. A brilliant goal!

This galvanised the team and we had another great attack up the left and Immy went for another shot on goal, just wide. It then became tit for tat as Newbury drove up the pitch and Emily made another drive up the pitch only to be denied. The first half ended with 2 defensive shorts, and great play by our defensive line and a great clear by Helen. So at half time we were one all and knew we could do this.

We started the second half with far more drive and a good push up the right and then the left with team Lucas. We really piled on the pressure and Emily made another great run but Newbury picked it up and caught us napping and managed to weave through our defence and even TJ's great play in goal couldn't save it as they one twoed it in. This bolstered Newbury who really piled the pressure on. But we were not done yet, we had a great run up the left again by Sophie and Sam but just missed out. Newbury though were determind not to be denied and had short corner after short corner, there were great clears by Helen, Hayley and TJ and great drives by Lydia but after 4 short corners one finally went in. We were determind not to be beaten and had a great drive up the pitch by Helen all the way to the D and a pass to Jess in the D but were denied by one of their defenders. The match then became about short corners and our defenders did their job time and time again but eventually one went in.

It was like watch a train wreck with everything in slow motion, there was no reason we seemed to be 4-1 down but as the scoreline went up unsurprisingly our spirits went down! With 5 minutes to spare and yet another goal we seemed to have lost it completely. But all of a sudden people put their heads up and we had some great skills by Catrin, tackles by Jess and finally seemed to be picking ourselves up. Unfortunately it was too little too late and the scoreline ended 5-1 much to our dismay.
