A close call

Home Counties Under 14 Girls Development League A

Phoenix &Ranelagh 0 Maidenhead 1

Sunday February 5, 2017.

By Jim Taylor

The winning goal – when it finally came in the last three minutes – was a little bit scrappy, but no

less than our girls deserved in a game they dominated throughout.

Two close range shots on target had already been blocked before Jess Lee hit the ball under the

body of the sprawling Phoenix ‘keeper. But still it wasn’t in!

A defender on the line hooked the ball clear but only succeeded in whacking it against her goalie’s

foot and then watched in despair as it rebounded into the net.

By this stage, I must admit, I was worried we were never going to score. We had camped out in the

Phoenix half throughout; controlled possession, created a hatful of chances and won so many short

But we could not put the ball in the net. Sadie could have had a hat-trick in the first period with

bettering finishing and a bit of luck while Alexis struck the post from distance with a fierce shot.

Phoenix, who are based at Reading University, had been pushed back from the start – thanks to our

pacey attack – and were forced to defend deep and rely on breakaway attacks to relieve pressure.

We started with Jess and Sadie as a front two who – along with Alexis from the bench – lead the line

well. But it was our midfield diamond which provided the dynamism and drive that helped us win.

Caroline – who was voted best player by the opposition – was outstanding as our holding midfield

player. She was everywhere, winning tackles, breaking up play and driving forward and passing well.

Out-wide Tilly on the left and Elisa on the right were creative and happy to run with the ball, while

Jenna at the top of the diamond linked well and was regularly bearing down on goal.

When Phoenix did manage an attack, Captain Lauren and fellow central defender Sophie soon

snuffed out their breaks. Anna – as an attacking left wing back – was also excellent and determined.

Rosie and Tanisha shared duties at right back. Elinor, in goal, did not have much to do, but whenever

she was called into action she was clean and decisive.

It was good to get the Development Squad back into a winning groove, but it should have been

much more convincing. We must work at our finishing and especially our short corner set-pieces.

Next week the Under 14s are back at Braywick for training.
