A COMPREHENSIVE victory - with two goals in each half - helped Maidenhead maintain momentum and their four-match unbeaten start to the season.
This was a good team performance in the EH Cup, away to local rivals Wycombe, with the goals spread among our attacking players.
We made the all-important bright start, launching good moves to Frankie and Tilly upfront, and deservedly took the lead in the eighth minute – thanks to a rasping shot by Emily across goal.
Whenever we attacked we looked dangerous, we dominated possession and our defensive cover restricted Wycombe’s attempts on goal to few and far between.
We doubled our lead in the 15th minute with LVS school pals Maisie and Ellie combining excellently down the right flank.
First Maisie in midfield, fed the ball to Ellie who cut into the D but whose shot was blocked. Determinedly, Ellie won the ball back and attacked again and finally the ball broke to Maisie – following in – to sweep the ball home.
Wycombe played their part, despite being forced to sit deep and rely on counter attacks. Defensive midfielders Tori and Amelia mopped up most breaks but, on one rare occasion, Lizzie needed to be calm in front of goal and sweep the ball to safety.
Mostly, the back three had time to play the ball out wide and build attacks. The best one started with Katie moving the ball out to Lizzie who played in Holly, behind the Wycombe left back. She crossed and Amelia’s shot just fizzed wide past the far post.
We started the second half strongly again with first Frankie, then Tilly and finally Holly launching good raids down the right flank.
The third goal – which effectively killed off the game – came nine minutes into the second half with a great turn in the D by Tilly who lost her defender and then placed her shot into the far post.
This was the result of another move which had started from deep, but Wycombe were pushing up further on our back three and finally created a proper couple of chances and Alexis had to kick away.
To be fair, Wycombe battled away in midfield and Holly suffered a nasty bump on the head when the ball flew up off her stick in one fierce exchange.
We still created chances and Emily and Tori had good efforts. But it wasn’t until six minutes from time we scored our fourth and final goal. Frankie started the move; Tilly’s slap was saved and poacher Maddy was on hand to hit home the rebound.
A good win with every squad member playing her part. There was calm control at the back from Hattie and Anna, effort and pressing in midfield by Holly and Stella and skills aplenty upfront.
The win over Wycombe keep us second in the table – but only behind Reading on goal difference after they beat Slough 8-0. We host Slough next in two weeks time.
