A tough Sunday afternoon....
Well what an afternoon! Starting with a strong squad, Maidenhead came out of the blocks firing and pretty quickly imposed themselves on the game. Issie HE and Teona took control of the midfield and with Annie and Lucy providing width we started to create lots of opportunity for Isabelle M and Jemma L upfront. With our defensive unit of Divya, Davina, Tara and Lauren largely untroubled it turned into a bit of an onslaught on the Oxford goal, which like a good steak sauce was well and truly peppered! We hit both posts , a cross bar and narrowly missed on both sides of the goal plus their keeper making some excellent saves. At that point we maybe should have realised that it was not our day...... when oxford broke away with 40 secs remaining of the half and scored we knew it was definitely not our day.
In the second half it was more of the same predominantly one way traffic, we conceded no short corners in the whole game and must have been awarded about thirty yet still we could not make the break through. Then as we pushed to score, another breakaway with 12 mins to go saw Oxford force another goal to make it 2-0. The girls did not give up and eventually we got one back via great perseverance from Issie HE and Teona. We had unfortunately left it a bit late and despite finishing on a succession of short corners we could not find the equaliser.
It was a real shame as I have never seen a team dominate quite as much as we did and not win. We talked about composure in front of goal after the game and that is something we will work on it training.
Everyone played well, Divya, Davina and Lauren in defence were excellent and a shut out of short corners is testament to their hard work, in the forwards Jemma and Lucy had good games, Annie was excellent up front and was unlucky not to score and Isabelle M , who was coming back from flu was similarly unlucky not to get on the score board.
However player/s of the match was shared by Issie HE and Teona who both ran their socks off and by winning the ball back created the opportunities that unfortunately we could not put them away.
Heads up girls, you could have tried any harder and it was just one of those days. It was definitely not the umpires fault
