Marlow Girls U16s 2 – 4 Maidenhead Girls Under 16s

TWO second half goals by Hollie gave Maidenhead a well-deserved away win against local rivals Marlow.
A determined all-round team performance – in wet and wild conditions – saw our girls grow stronger, the longer the game went on.
This meant we were able to move the game more into Marlow territory in the second half. And, the more we pressed the ball higher up the pitch, the more mistakes their defenders made and turnovers we won.
Our final goal was a classic example as Hollie, regularly driving forward from midfield, intercepted a weak Marlow clearance from a 16 hit-out and strode into the home team’s D to score.
This completed a hectic five minutes for her, midway through the second half. First, she put us back in front after a lovely through ball by playmaker Yana and, in between, she won us a penalty corner after being upended in the box by a clumsy Marlow challenge.
The first half had been much more even. We took an early lead with a crisp strike from Ava on the right only for Marlow to hit back eight minutes later, after a half clearance.
We went back in front again, shortly before the break, with Elle finishing off a good move down the left by scoring at the far post. But Marlow immediately levelled it up after another dangerous attack down their right flank.
In the second half we stated winning more battles all over the pitch. Up-front our girls, lead by Molly, chased down every through ball; in midfield we won more 50:50 tackles, and in defence Annabelle was calm in the centre while Phoebe made some excellent interceptions on the left.
In contrast, Erin our goalie, who had been kept busy in the first half, barely touched the ball for the entire second period.
There was positive play all over the pitch and a great team spirit among the girls. But, of course, there is plenty more to work on at training tomorrow (Monday) night. The U16s next scheduled game is in two weeks at home to Thame.
