A hard fought 1-0 win
The 2s got back to winning ways on Saturday with a hard-fought 1-0 win over Oxford Hawks 4s. It was a match that Maids dominated, but failed to make the most of good opportunities to ensure a comfortable victory.
The only goal of the game came in the first half as Cameron Upton got through 1-on-1 against the last defender. He was forced wide onto his reverse and showed great maturity and sense to realise that the angle was probably too tight to shoot. Instead he worked onto his strong side and threaded the ball through three Hawks defenders for Ollie Lovegrove to fire home the winning goal.
Despite taking the advantage Maids failed to add any more goals, with opportunities squandered through the game by Ollie, Chris Miall, Rob Gauld and Anthony Brayshaw. As the game moved on green cards started appeared with two for Hawks and one for Maids through Chris Miall’s classic “forward’s tackle”! However, Maids were not made to pay for their wastefulness as the defence was superbly marshalled by Paul Brown and on the odd occasions that Hawks did get clean shots away Andy Downing was in fine form in the home goal.
Next week, Maids have an early start away to Abingdon to look to build on this week’s win and push up the table.
