Solid win to finish the season
By Nick Lloyd
Maidenhead 2s ended the season with a solid 2-0 against Leighton Buzzard 1s to confirm their return to play again in MBBO Div 2 next season.
Playing against the team second from bottom, Maids dominated the first half but contrived to miss plenty of opportunities to take the lead until Steve Roe controlled a deflected ball into to D, turned and flicked into the top corner. Maids continued to apply pressure, but were unable to take advantage with a number of glaring misses leaving the game in the balance at half-time.
The theme continued in the second half with Maids dominating possession and territory, but scoring to close out the match. They then decided to make things more challenging with first Marcus Foley (green card for bundling) and Oli Lovegrove (green for a cynical stick tackle upgraded to yellow for dissent) leaving Maids short-handed for almost ten minutes. This resulted in a sustained period of possession for Leighton Buzzard, but Maids survived through strong defensive work by Pete Edwards, Jamie O'Connell, Ian Osbon and Dan Brooke, and a couple of good saves from Andy Downing.
Upon being back to a full complement of 11 players, Maids finally put the game to bed. Matt Deane won the ball off Leighton Buzzard in midfield and Maids swiftly countered through Matt and Aran Wellman, before Oli made up for his card by slotting in at the back post to make it 2-0 and complete the scoring.
