The Monarchs headed into the first game of the New Year with optimism, facing Gerrards Cross who started the match bottom of the league. Unfortunately, within 10 minutes, the team were 2-0 thanks to some quick attacks from the opposition. One goal was conceded from a short corner and although there could have been some complaint as to the height of the ball which was volleyed into the net after the first shot (rather dangerously near Mike who had rushed out to close down the opportunity), the team could have little complaint about the scoreline. However, from then on, the team started to pick up the pace a little more and with some good work firstly from Clint in winning the ball back near the oppositions D and then from Tim to nick the ball away from the defender, the Monarchs were back in the back when Tim finished with an angled shot in the far corner. For the rest of the half, the team were much more in the match but were also staving off pressure from Gerrards Cross, with Connor, as always, imperious in goal and keeping out a number of shots. There effort levels in the second half were much better and the team were unlucky not to have picked up an equaliser after a number of decent attacks which involved Bruce playing well in a new position on the right side of midfield, and some good interchange between the midfield and attackers. Rod had a good opportunity midway through the first half but the keeper did well to get out in time to smother the ball and Tim had a shot cleared off the line after Viren's shot was also saved by the keeper late on. In the late exchanges it could have been anyone's match but ultimately, the team lost this game in the first 10 minutes. The Monarchs' defence did well to keep the opposition out in the second half and started to intercept more of the through balls as the game went on, which led to more counter attacks. On the positive side the team welcomed back Wayne after a long absence with injury and it was great to see him get a game under his belt. A disappointing loss but the second half gave more to shout about than the first. Next up is top of the table Amersham at home.
