Who are we? We are coaches, we are Penny Avis.
Our Club is made up of players, coaches, umpires, managers, volunteers, committee members and so much more.
Over the season we’re going to introduce you to some of these people that make up MHC.
Penny has been a club member since 1991 as a player and then joined the colts coaching team when her daughter started playing in 2008/09. She can be found every Sunday coaching our U8s and most Saturdays watching her daughter in our 1st XI.
How do you volunteer for the Club?
I am a Colts coach (currently with U8s); was team administrator for 8 years; on the Committee for the U18s Easter Tournaments and sourced kit for 5 years. Have also taken part in and run fund raising events for our Easter Tournament
What does it entail?
- As coach it involves attending/planning Sunday morning sessions and ensuring parents are leaving their children in a safe environment and having fun whilst learning new skills (not just hockey skills but building confidence, team work and leadership too).
- Being part of the ET Committee involves attending regular planning meetings
- Sourcing, pricing and supplying ET kit through Hawkinsport
- Encouraging ET attendees to get involved with fund raising
How long have you been doing it?
Started as coach and admin in season 2008/09 when Annie joined the U8s, so 10 years.
Why do you do it?
I joined Maidenhead HC in 1991 as a 27 yr old playing for and subsequently captaining the ladies 1st XI. After suffering with knee issues and not being able to play for as long as I wanted to I encouraged Annie to join aged 7 and it was the natural thing to do to help out. 10 years on and I still love being involved, encouraging my passion for hockey wherever I can. I know that clubs would suffer if volunteers weren’t around and am proud to support Maidenhead HC in any way I can.
What's the best thing about it?
I love hearing or seeing that participants are having fun, making new friends, joining in, building confidence, learning new skills and getting active. I firmly believe that friends made through hockey can be lifelong.
Last season Penny was awarded the Stuchberry Cup for her services to the Club.
A big thank you to Penny for continuing to give to the club and inspire our youngest players.
