A dogged defensive display made it three league wins in a row for Maidenhead Men’s 1s, who overcame a spirited Wycombe side with a 3-1 win at Altwood on Saturday.

Keen to build on last week’s win at Wallingford, Maids were out of the blocks in a flash, and AJ took his tally for the season into double figures with the opening goal inside the first five minutes.

Wycombe however, immediately pegged the men in white back. A quick counter left Maids a little short at the back, and in attempting to block a shot, Dave was unfortunate in deflecting the ball into his own net. 1-1.

A midfield battle ensued for most of the opening half, with little in the way of goal-mouth action, until a short corner for Maids on the half-hour mark. AJ’s injection set up Marcus’ drag flick, superbly executed into the top corner. 2-1 up at the break, but Maids could consider themselves a little fortunate to have their noses in front.

In the second half, Wycombe continued with their pressure; a lot of possession in the Maidenhead half, without really threatening the home side’s goal. On the attack, Maidenhead found themselves frustrated and some words from the Umpire were needed.

With ten minutes remaining, Maidenhead finally got their third goal, again from a short corner – another drag flick, this time from Flynn, capped a great individual performance and fully deserved MoM award.
