Maidenhead’s Ladies 1s achieved their first win of the season this Saturday 30th November against Wycombe Ladies 1s.
The home side made a strong start, with Wycombe only getting forward a handful of times. Their first threat was quelled when Katie Parry stopped a shot from a short corner on her reverse.
Maidenhead were playing some textbook hockey up the right hand side of the pitch, passing the ball around the opposition. Mia Rogers then opened the scoring, putting Maidenhead ahead.
Not only were the home side winning numerous short corners and playing effective hockey in and around the D, but we were also formidable in defence, with Jen Martin making some fantastic tackles.
It could have been 2-0 shortly after, but Sarah Fuller couldn’t get out the way of Issy Harris-Evans’ shot on target in time. Wycombe were able to get a goal back but the momentum was very much still with the home side.
Miraculously, Liza Semenko’s relentless shots on goal were not materialising into goals. Even when she moved the ball around the player and got a lifted shot off, the goal was somehow cleared off the line in the air.
Crammy then scored a wonderful goal in the bottom left corner, making it 2-1 going into half time.
The second half started off just as strong, when Katie Parry passed the ball to Hannah Stone on the penalty spot, who slotted it home. Katie then missed an opportunity to make it 4-1, but made up for it when she posted up in the D towards Kate Addison, who passed the ball into Katie on the penalty spot. She showed great composure to move the ball out of the goalkeeper’s space and slot it past her.
Maidenhead’s fifth goal came from a short corner out to Liza, who passed the rebound from the initial shot out left to Issy, who calmly gave her the ball back for Liza to expertly finish the move.
Maidenhead tied up the game with a goal from Crammy, making it 6-1 for our first win of the season.
This convincing win was exactly what the team needed, and we hope to carry the momentum into our away game vs Oxford University this weekend.
