Saturday’s clash against **Maidenhead Hockey Club** and **Oxford Hawks Hockey Club** was always going to be a huge encounter, and for Maidenhead it was a must-win fixture. With three vital points on the line, Maidenhead delivered a performance full of grit, belief and determination to secure a dramatic 2–1 victory.

The game began at a relentless pace, with both sides battling hard throughout the first quarter in a tense and evenly matched contest. Maidenhead went into the second quarter looking particularly strong, their press working exceptionally well and putting Oxford under sustained pressure. The intensity and organisation off the ball were causing real problems for Oxford and Maidenheads solid defence and amazing flat stick tackles from Vossy and Maddie at the back was making it very difficult for the Oxford side.

However, with just 10 seconds remaining before half-time, disaster struck. A turnover in midfield allowed Oxford Hawks to capitalise instantly, punishing the mistake with a clinical finish to take a 1–0 lead into the break — a tough going into half time.

Despite the setback, the halftime team talk was overwhelmingly positive. Maidenhead knew this game was there for the taking; it simply required belief, composure and sticking to the game plan to earn the three points.

The equaliser came from a brilliantly executed short corner routine. The injection found Izzy at the top, who fired a dangerous ball across goal towards the far-right post, where Chantal was perfectly placed to get the final deflection. It was a superbly worked set piece and exactly the response Maidenhead needed. Spirits lifted instantly, and the belief across the pitch was clear to see.

Carrying that momentum into the final quarter, Maidenhead struck again early on. A fantastic interception from Edwina in open play turned defence into attack in an instant. She fed the ball through to Sarah, who found herself one-on-one with the goalkeeper. As the keeper advanced, Sarah showed great composure to slip the ball selflessly to Holly, who was perfectly positioned at the post to tap home and give Maidenhead a 2–1 lead.

With the advantage secured, all that remained was for Maidenhead to manage the game sensibly and with composure. However, the closing stages proved anything but straightforward. With five minutes remaining, Maidenhead were reduced to nine players following two yellow cards, setting up a tense finale.

Under immense pressure, the team produced an unbelievable defensive effort. Every player dug deep, throwing themselves into tackles and blocks. Goalkeeper Vicky was outstanding in the dying moments, pulling off a series of incredible last-minute saves to deny Oxford Hawks and preserve the lead.

When the final whistle blew, it confirmed a hard-fought and thoroughly deserved three points for Maidenhead. In a must-win match filled with drama, resilience and teamwork, Maidenhead showed tremendous character to secure a vital 2–1 victory.
